ISLAMIC, Mongols. Chaghatayid Khans. temp. Alughu, AH 658-664 / AD 1260-1266. Dirham (Bronze, 37 mm, 6.10 g, 7 h), Samarqand, AH 663 = 1264/5. Within a circle, ‘ālmāghuji / yāz wa qolugh / bulghāy’ (‘Whoever does not accept it will become a mercenary and a slave’ in Uighur in Arabic script); in the margin, ‘ḍuriba hādhā al-dirham bi baldat Samarqand bi tārīkh shuhūr sana thalāth [wa] sittīn [wa] sitta miʾa’ (‘This dirham was struck in the city of Samarqand in the months of the year 663’ in Arabic). Rev. Within a circle, ‘Samarqand / dā ijlin / tāshlin’ (‘In Samarqand, inside [and] outside’ (in Uighur in Arabic script); in the margin, repetition of the obverse marginal legend. Album B1979.
